T h i s year our Soil Stewardship w o r k consisted of our annual t o u r f o r m i n i s t e r s .
The
week p r e v i o u s to Soil Stewardship Week some of our m i n i s t e r s helped w i t h a f i v e m i n u t e r a d i o p r o g r a m . Some had been i n o t h e r c o u n t r i e s and t o l d of t h e i r e x p e r i e n c e s
and l i f e . W e w o u l d l i k e t o t h a n k t h e s e m i n i s t e r s a n d a l s o t h e r a d i o s t a t i o n W K L A f o r
g i v i n g us t h e t i m e f o r t h e s e b r o a d c a s t s .
Our t o u r s t a r t e d w i t h a v i s i t to the A m b e r s a w m i l l . We watched logs being debarked
b e f o r e they w e r e sawed, w i t h a l l heavy w o r k b e i n g done by p o w e r . V e r y l i t t l e hand
l a b o r w a s i n v o l v e d . D u e t o t h e r a i n y d a y , We d r o v e b y s o m e p o n d s o n o u r w a y t o t h e
Don L u n d b e r g f a r m . T h e r e w e saw h i s new m i l k i n g p a r l o r and new f e e d i n g s y s t e m .

E i g h t s t u d e n t s f r o m St. S t a n i s l a u s S c h o o l e n t e r e d s c r a p b o o k s i n t h e l o c a l " Y o u t h
Soil and W a t e r C o n s e r v a t i o n Scrapbook Contest" and f r o m these f i v e w e r e chosen
to be s e n t t o t h e S t a t e c o n t e s t . W e h a v e b e e n n o t i f i e d t h a t t w o o f t h e s e s t u d e n t s
have won f i r s t place a w a r d s i n State-wide j u d g i n g . T h e s e students a r e C a r o l
K e a t i n g , who is i n the 5th grade and R u s s e l l K r u s k a , a s i x t h g r a d e r , both of L u d ington.
F o r the c o m i n g y e a r w e a r e p l a n n i n g to have each school i n the county p a r t i c i p a t e
in the l o c a l contest. We a r e also sponsoring a Woodland Evaluation P r o g r a m f o r
the H i g h School A g r i c u l t u r e C l a s s e s .

A noon l u n c h e o n w a s h e l d at the Swedish Coffee Pot. T h e next stop was at the L a n d O-Pines, w h e r e it was explained how t r e e s a r e packaged f o r shipment. Each person
was presented w i t h a s m a l l t r e e .

T h i s a g a i n has been a s u c c e s s f u l y e a r i n o u r F o r e s t r y P r o g r a m . Some 2 5 0 , 0 0 0 t r e e s
w e r e planted by D i s t r i c t c o o p e r a t o r s .
M o s t of these w e r e Red Pine. T h e i n t e r e s t i n
planting w i l d l i f e food plants continues to i n c r e a s e , w i t h 32,000 being planted this y e a r .
One o f t h e m o r e s a t i s f y i n g p a r t s o f t h e F o r e s t r y P r o g r a m i s t h e o p p o r t u n i t y t o be o f
s e r v i c e t o a b s e n t e e l a n d o w n e r s . O u r c o n t a c t s w i t h t h e s e l a n d o w n e r s has r e s u l t e d i n
m a n y m o r e a c r e s of land being put to i t s best use. A new p r o g r a m i n effect only p a r t
o f t h i s y e a r a l l o w s us t o g i v e m o r e l a n d o w n e r s t h e b e n e f i t s o f b e i n g i n t h e T r e e F a r m
System.

September 6, 1967 -- L u d i n g t o n D a i l y News announced t h a t Dr. John
Eaton, Dean o f I n s t r u c t i o n a t Cochise C o l l e g e o f Douglas, A r i z . ,
had been s e l e c t e d as WSCC's p r e s i d e n t . He would b e g i n w o r k i n g a t
t h e c o l l e g e i n October. He i s a n a t i v e o f M a r s h a l l , Mich., and
had been i n t h e I o n i a s c h o o l system f o r 13 y e a r s b e f o r e becoming
a K e l l o g g F e l l o w t o study community c o l l e g e a d m i n i s t r a t i o n a t t h e
U n i v e r s i t y o f M i c h i g a n i n 19 62 and j o i n i n g the s t a f f a t Cochise
i n 1964.
January 4, 1968 -- Dr. Eaton announced a t a L u d i n g t o n Chamber o f
Commerce meeting t h a t t h e Board o f T r u s t e e s had t a k e n o p t i o n s on
two p i e c e s o f l a n d as proposed s i t e s f o r the c o l l e g e . One i s the
c u r r e n t l o c a t i o n o f the c o l l e g e a t t h e c o r n e r o f S t i l e s and Sugar
Grove roads and t h e o t h e r i s near t h e i n t e r s e c t i o n o f U.S. 31 and
F o u n t a i n Road. A s i t e survey team recommended t h e two l o c a t i o n s .
Dr. Eaton announced t h a t Robert B r a d l e y had begun h i s d u t i e s as
b u s i n e s s manager and t h a t t h e c o l l e g e would be o p e r a t i n g o u t o f
o f f i c e s a t the C W Smith B u i l d i n g i n S c o t t v i l l e .

January 22??, 1968 -- John L. Ham, P r o d u c t i o n Manager a t t h e
Manistee Packaging C o r p o r a t i o n o f America p l a n t , was named t o the
board o f t r u s t e e s a f t e r B a r r y Bourdo r e s i g n e d because he was
l e a v i n g the college d i s t r i c t .
March 16, 1968 -- Two a d d i t i o n a l s i t e s were added t o the p o s s i b l e
l o c a t i o n f o r the campus. One was j u s t n o r t h w e s t o f S c o t t v i l l e on
Johnson Road and t h e o t h e r was on upper Hamlin Lake. The Hamlin
Lake s i t e was r e p o r t e d t o be w i t h i n one m i l e o f t h e median p o i n t
o f p o p u l a t i o n f o r the c o l l e g e d i s t r i c t .
May 23, 1968 -- A t a s p e c i a l m e e t i n g , t h e Board o f T r u s t e e s v o t e d
t o l o c a t e the campus a t t h e c o r n e r o f S t i l e s and Sugar Grove
roads.
September 1968 -- I n s t r u c t o r s were h i r e d f o r the e v e n i n g c l a s s e s
t h a t w i l l be o f f e r e d by t h e c o l l e g e a t Manistee and S c o t t v i l l e
high schools.
They are Harry N u c k o l l s , J u d i t h S e u t t e r , Donald
S t r o u f , B e r t K e l l e y , Leo T e h o l i z , John Bastrom, C l a r k H a m i l t o n ,
and Dorothy T r e b i l c o c k . There were 118 e n r o l l e d i n the f i r s t
e i g h t c l a s s e s -- 47 men and 67 women.
September 9, 1968 -- The board o f t r u s t e e s approved the annexat i o n r e q u e s t s o f t h e W a l k e r v i l l e and W e a r e - C r y s t a l school d i s -

�t r i c t s i n t o the college d i s t r i c t .
O r i g i n a l l y , the college d i s t r i c t included the p u b l i c school d i s t r i c t s located w i t h i n the
Mason and Manistee i n t e r m e d i a t e s c h o o l d i s t r i c t s .
September 1968 -- Plans f o r t h e f i r s t c o l l e g e b u i l d i n g were approved a t t h e September meeting o f t h e Board o f T r u s t e e s . They
were p r e p a r e d by a r c h i t e c t s Vander Meiden &amp; K o t e l e s .
The
t r u s t e e s hoped t h a t t h e y would be a d v e r t i s i n g f o r c o n s t r u c t i o n
b i d s by Nov. 1.
November 14, 196 8 -- Members o f an a d v i s o r y committee from 12
area h i g h s c h o o l s were named. They are Martye Durham, Mason

March 14, 1969 -- The low b i d o f t h e A l s t r o m C o n s t r u c t i o n Co. o f
Muskegon f o r t h e c o n s t r u c t i o n o f t h e Campus Center was t e n t a t i v e l y okayed.
I t was $801,820; and a f t e r d i s c u s s i o n w i t h t h e
company, a l t e r a t i o n s i n s p e c i f i c a t i o n s had lowered t h e p r i c e t o
$739,000. I t was hoped t h a t t h e c o s t o f t h e b u i l d i n g c o u l d be
reduced t o $675,000. A l s o , i t was announced t h a t f i v e i n s t r u c t o r s had been h i r e d , and t h a t 105 a p p l i c a t i o n s had been r e c e i v e d
